2000 -- Our 40th Year in Business
This year, Urban celebrates the 40th anniversary of its founding. Established in Philadelphia on August 1, 1960, the privately-owned consulting engineering firm has grown from 7 to over 350 employees in 7 offices in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and Connecticut.
Principal owners Edward M. D'Alba, PE, President and Joseph P. McAtee, PE, Executive Vice President, marked the date on August 1, 2000 with a party and champagne toast with employees at the Philadelphia corporate headquarters. "From our vantage point overlooking Independence Hall," said Mr. McAtee, "we can see many of our projects that have shaped the city and will play a major role in its future. These include I-95, the Vine Street Expressway, and the National Constitution Center (under construction). Other notable projects in which we played a major role include the Center City Commuter Rail Connection, Philadelphia International Airport, the First Union Center, the Schuylkill Expressway, and the Blue Route."
Mr. D'Alba noted that the firm's 40th anniversary was particularly significant in light of Urban's recent ISO 9001 certification. He stated that "Urban is one of only a handful of consulting engineering firms in the United States to earn this distinction. ISO certification attests to the quality of the services we provide and gives our clients an increased level of confidence that they are receiving the finest in engineering."
The second largest Philadelphia-based engineering firm, Urban is ranked No. 58, nationally, in terms of annual revenue among construction management firms by the Engineering News Record and No. 315 among design firms in the country.
