The Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard
is building its first ship, a $65 million container vessel. Scheduled for completion in 2002, the ship, designated Philadelphia CV2600, will have an overall length of 217 meters (712 feet), a beam of 32.2 meters (106 feet), and a deadweight of 30,000 tons. CV2600 will have a service speed of 22.7 knots, a range of some 10,000 nautical miles, and the capacity to carry 1,161 containers.

Urban, in joint venture, provided civil, structural, and environmental engineering services for the design and construction of the 114-acre site, home to the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Urban developed demolition, site preparation and utility construction packages, and played a major role in structural design for the 750,000 square feet of new industrial floor space. Urban's environmental responsibilities included asbestos and lead-based paint mitigation, negotiation of contamination issues with regulatory agencies, coordination of all environmental permits, and OSHA compliance. More than 20 separate federal, state and local permit applications and notices were required to obtain approval for demolition, construction and operations.
