Urban Receives Notice-to-Proceed

In an effort to maintain the structural integrity of Interstate 95, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is investing more than $500 million to rebuild bridges, install Intelligent Transportation Systems, and upgrade many interchanges. Urban Engineers, Inc. has been selected by PennDOT, 6-0 to perform preliminary engineering and environmental documentation for an approximate one-mile length of SR 0095, Section D01, Delaware Expressway (I-95) in Bensalem Township, Bucks County.

Included in this project are interchange improvements, roadway reconstruction, and bridge widenings, rehabilitations, or replacements. The existing Street Road interchange with I-95 is a "Tight Diamond" configuration squeezed between the Amtrak main line tracks including SEPTA R-7 and Bristol Pike. Inadequate distance and storage between the ramp terminus intersections at Street Road creates a disruptive gridlock condition during peak traffic hours that often adversely impact the I-95 mainline. The key to the successful completion of this project is to evaluate whether improvements to the existing "Tight Diamond" interchange and widening of the Street Road structures are adequate to improve traffic flow along this major traffic artery. The Urban Team will develop workable alternatives, including "Urban Interchange" concepts, in an effort to overcome the limitations imposed by the physical constraints and the heavy truck movement to and from the industries east of I-95. The Point-of-Access study will determine which interchange concept is best suited for this project.

Urban's Project Manager is Matthew C. Marquardt, PE. He will be the primary contact with PennDOT, 6-0 and will oversee the delivery of the required services. Daniel J. Leinheiser, PE, will provide Quality Assurance and Quality Control efforts.

The estimated construction cost of this project is $20 million.
