Urban assigned to Las Vegas monorail project
The Federal Transit Administration has named Urban Engineers, Inc. as Project Management Oversight Consultant (PMOC) for the 3.1 mile extension of the Resort Corridor Monorail System into downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The $440 million project will extend a 4-mile long, privately-funded section, currently under construction. The Grantee for the project, the Regional Transportation Commission, currently manages bus operations in southern Nevada. The monorail is the first of its kind in this country that serves as a public transit system.
The private section of the monorail, which will run from Tropicana Avenue to the Sahara Avenue, is being built through local and private funding. The extension, which runs from Sahara Avenue to Freemont Street, will be built with federal and private funds. The monorail is a design/build/operate and maintain project that will be managed by the Las Vegas Monorail Company, a non-profit organization to be appointed by the Governor of Nevada after construction completion.
Total cost of the system is estimated to be over $1 billion. The first phase of the monorail is scheduled for completion in January 2004, at which point the Phase 1 will go into revenue operation. The second phase construction will begin in 2003, with revenue operation in 2006. The estimated project completion is 2007.
Buses will link the Las Vegas area with the monorail, which will feature stops at such attractions as the MGM Grand, Bally's/Paris, Flamingo, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton, and Sahara Hotel & Casino.
