FTC Update
. . . . . . . . . . .
One of Urban’s largest facility construction management projects, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) $187 million Frankford Transportation Center (FTC), passed a major milestone in its completion with the reopening of Bridge Street. The reconstructed portion of Bridge Street provides improved access for the 15 SEPTA bus routes and the trackless trolley that will serve the FTC and eliminate a previously hazardous five-point intersection.

Located in the Frankford section of Northeast Philadelphia, the FTC is the largest single site project ever undertaken by SEPTA. The FTC will replace SEPTA’s 80-year old Frankford Terminal with a modern, intermodal transportation complex. Here, riders will be able to connect from the Frankford Elevated (Blue Line) to the bus and trolley routes, through an enclosed, climate-controlled waiting area with electronic schedule displays, retail shops, rest rooms, a sales office, information center, and a transit police station.

Urban, in Joint Venture, is responsible for program management, construction management, safety, quality assurance, master schedule management, operations coordination, community relations, and contract administration. Urban maintains close coordination with SEPTA’s Capital and Operations Departments, the designer, contractors, the community, and SEPTA riders. Construction is being performed while maintaining accessibility for more than 50,000 commuters who pass through the facility daily.

The ceremony for the Bridge Street opening was held on October 28 and was attended by SEPTA and City of Philadelphia officials, local and state legislators, U.S. Congressman Robert A. Borski, and the Federal Transit Administration’s Acting Regional Administrator Herman Shipman.
