Urban’s efforts for the City of Philadelphia’s Commerce Department to revitalize a brownfields site for FedEx has become a three-time award winning project.

At its Annual Awards Dinner on February 6, the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies recognized Urban’s brownfields cleanup project as the top environmental project in the Commonwealth as it presented Urban with an Honor Award for Environmental Excellence. The project competed with 43 entries that were received from consulting firms across the Commonwealth.

Previously, the project won the 2003 Delaware Valley Outstanding Project of the Year from the Philadelphia Chapter, Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, and the 2002 Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence.

Cleanup and redevelopment of the contaminated project site for a new $15 million FedEx facility created 150 jobs, removed and properly disposed of 15,000 tons of contaminated soil, removed 10,000 gallons of contaminated groundwater and tons of assorted debris, mitigated the risk of migration of contaminants to the Schuylkill River, and stabilized the surrounding commercial and residential communities.
