The City of Philadelphia’s Commerce Department has selected Urban to provide environmental engineering services in connection with the City’s Brownfields Redevelopment Program. This marks the renewal of Urban’s services for another 12 month period.
Under the contract, Urban will assist the City to determine potential environmental problems at brownfields sites and find ways to mitigate the environmental concerns so sites can be placed back into productive use through industrial and commercial development.
Under previous brownfields contracts with the Commerce Department, Urban provided environmental services at 24 sites within the City. Services have ranged from Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and site characterizations to emergency response and remedial action plans. Site characterization, risk assessment, cleanup programs, and attainment sampling have been conducted for vacant parcels, buildings, commercial sites, and large industrial tracts. One of these cleanups, the Celotex Site, was recognized for its innovation by winning the 2003 Outstanding Engineering Achievement from the Philadelphia Chapter, Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers; the 2003 Honor Award for Environmental Excellence from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies; and the 2002 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
