Urban to Conduct Traffic Calming Plan for Stamford, CT |
Urban has been awarded a contract by the City of Stamford, Connecticut to prepare a citywide traffic calming plan. The firm will develop an implementation strategy for the City that identifies both the locations and types of traffic calming measures recommended for installation within each of Stamford’s 20 voting districts. Specifically, Urban will investigate each residential neighborhood to define the nature and extent of traffic-related problems along a given street or at a specific intersection, and then - with input from the community - recommend the most cost-effective measure for solving identified problems. Unique to the plan is Urban's highly interactive, high energy, public process that will be used to have stakeholders participate in development and support of the plan.
The master plan will represent a "blueprint" to reduce neighborhood cut-through traffic and speeding, and keep non-residential traffic on non-residential streets. The plan will also establish a community process by which adjustments to the plan can be made as conditions change over the years of deployment. The outcome of this project would be the second large-scale, comprehensive citywide Traffic Calming Master Plan to be developed in the entire United States (after Urban’s successful completion of a plan for Hartford, Connecticut). Urban's aim is to encourage development of a multi modal environment where pedestrians, vehicles, and bicycles can safely travel.
