Urban to help develop 130 acre site in Northeast Philadelphia

The Westrum Development Company has selected Urban to provide civil/site engineering services in connection with the development of the 130.8 acre former Byberry State Hospital site, located at the northwest corner of Southampton Road and Roosevelt Boulevard (U.S. Route 1) in far northeast Philadelphia. The site will be divided into a mixed-use development consisting of approximately 40% residential housing, 40% commercial use, and 20% open space. Westrum will lead the development of the open space and residential component, which will consist of approximately 500 active-adult mixed residential housing units.

The hospital, which has been closed for approximately 14 years, includes many vacant buildings, underground tunnels and other deteriorated structures.

Urban will prepare the layout of proposed streets, major landscaping/streetscape items, tunnel network, utilities including connection locations, grading, and stormwater drainage structures. Additional responsibilities include holding coordination meetings with the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for appropriate environmental permits, zoning and subdivision approval.
