Urban selected for SugarHouse Slots Casino

Urban has been selected as the lead civil engineer for the design of Philadelphia’s $500 million SugarHouse Casino to be built on the site of the former Jack Frost Sugar Refinery on North Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia. The SugarHouse Casino is one of two slots casinos to be built in Philadelphia.

Urban’s services will cover site, environmental, and marine engineering.

Site engineering issues focuses on the geometric design of access roads, site grading, stormwater, relocation of 13’x 17’ Combined Sewer Outfall, utility relocations, service connections for a temporary facility, and zoning and land development approvals from the City of Philadelphia.

On the environmental side, Urban is responsible for specific environmental permitting exclusions and conditions. This includes a threatened and endangered species survey, fisheries survey, NPDES stormwater permit application, compliance with the City’s new Stormwater ordinance and zoning ordinance, and the Joint Chapter 105 permit.

The marine engineering will involve design of approximately 1200 LF of sheetpile bulkhead to stabilize the waterfront for the entire property, design of the foundation for the combined sewer overflow, and design of the retaining walls and bridges including pedestrian bridges, vehicular bridges, and retaining walls for access to the valet parking and casino level.
